01.Mifune Dinosaur Museum
■Commentary
The first-ever discovery of a carnivorous dinosaur tooth fossil in Japan in 1979led Mifune Town to become known as one of the country’s most noteworthy areas for producing dinosaur fossils. It also helped the town attract worldwide attention.
Found in various locations throughout around this region is the Mifune Group, which, as a stratum formed in the Late Cretaceous Period, yields the most diverse dinosaur fossils. The Mifune Dinosaur Museum has made it its mission to collect the fossils of the Mifune Group and make sure that they are inherited by future generations.
The museum’s regular exhibitions consist of five “zones,” and objects such as dinosaur fossils excavated in Mifune Town and entire dinosaur skeletons are on display. The Grand Parade of Dinosaur Evolution, featuring a lineup of impressive skeletal displays of dinosaurs discovered around the world, is especially worth seeing.
Additionally, along the path of the museum’s tour exhibit is the backyard, nicknamed the "open laboratory," where visitors can explore some of the workrooms where staff perform tasks such as cleaning fossils.
Along with that, the museum also puts on experiential programs, such as fossil excavation and specimen creation, that the whole family can enjoy.
