A bronze statue of Masayuki Kawamura, the first director of Keifuen (formerly known as Kyushu Sanatorium), is located at Keifuen alongside a grave that contains some of his remains. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1878, Director Kawamura worked at the sanatorium from its opening in 1909 until his death in 1933. Kawamura was gentle and relaxed, and by all accounts, he rarely blamed others. Notably, he tutored residents in haiku and is known to have initiated literary activities at Keifuen. Kawamura died suddenly at work on July 27, 1933. A memorial service for the director, beloved even by the residents, was held at the sanatorium, and it is said that apart from those severely ill, almost all residents were in attendance. The tombstone and statue at Keifuen were erected in 1934 and 1937, respectively.
