Choseian was once the site of a second home belonging to Masunaga Sanzaemon. In addition to being a wealthy merchant during the Bakumatsu, the name of the period describing the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Masunaga was also a gun expert and one of Mifune’s great thinkers of the day. It is said that when lords of the Hosokawa Clan took trips to see the Nanataki Waterfall, they would often stop by Choseian and admire the elegance of its famous garden. The garden, which, to this day, retains its past glory, still evokes the feelings of each season.
