Myokenzaka Park is the result of a transformation of a military cemetery built in 1942 and its vicinity into a park. It is where many individuals who were born in Old Mifune Town and lost their lives in the timespan between the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars of the Meiji period and the Pacific War of the Showa period, are enshrined. This spot is also famous for its cherry trees, as Yoshino cherries blossom throughout the park as spring comes along. The area neighboring Myokenzaka Park is said to have been a fierce battleground during the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion. It was where the deadly clashes of the battles of Taharazaka and Kichiji Pass unfolded seemingly endlessly. Among the memorials established in the area is a group burial site for 11 Kumamoto soldiers.
