Shiroyama Park is the site of the ruins of Mifune Castle, which Kai Soun was lord of during the Sengoku period. Town residents adore it as a place for relaxation because of its location atop a slightly elevated hill in the middle of town, overlooking the community. In the spring, the entire park is washed in the color of cherry blossoms and alive with tourists. In 1938, students from Kumamoto Prefectural Mifune Junior High School reconditioned the run-down castle ruins and named the area Shiroyama Park. However, due to food shortages that resulted from the Pacific War, the park became a field for growing sweet potatoes. Then, in 1965, the Yuen Railway, which today is the Kumamoto Bus Co., Ltd., commemorated the decommissioning of its train service by leasing the grounds from the town and going ahead with the park transformation, presenting it as a place for residents to spend leisure time.
