The Hyuga Okan was what the route from Kumamoto to Nobeoka in Hyuga Province back in the old feudal era was called. This road differs from the Bungo Kaido and Bunzen Kaido, the two main roads used during the Sankin-kotai alternate attendance system, in that this was a road for commoners to transport daily goods. Starting in Shinmachi, Kumamoto City and passing through Kashima, Mifune, and Yamato before ending in Hyuga Province, it is a historical road spanning 136 kilometers.
