The Monzen River Megane Bridge was completed in 1808. It is the oldest stone bridge in the Midori River basin and the second oldest in the prefecture. It once supported the daily lives of people when it served as part of an important road that went from Kumamoto through Yabe (present-day Yamato Town) to Hyuga in Miyazaki Prefecture. It is still cherished to this day by area residents, functioning as a road to get to school or around town. The word Monzen means “in front of the gate" in Japanese, and because the small river that flowed beneath the bridge ran past the front gate of Eijuji Temple, it is believed that is how the bridge got its name.
